We Didn't Expect Alaska to Become One of Our Favorite Family Vacations
Before our Alaska cruise, we expected beautiful scenery.
We expected glaciers.
We expected wildlife.
What we didn't expect was how much our entire family—including our son—would absolutely fall in love with Alaska.
If you're considering an Alaska cruise with children, here's what surprised us most and what we'd do again in a heartbeat.
Alaska Doesn't Feel Like a Typical Cruise
When most people think of cruising, they picture:
Caribbean beaches
Pool decks
Tropical drinks
Warm weather
Alaska is completely different.
Every morning felt like waking up inside a nature documentary.
Instead of rushing to the pool, we found ourselves grabbing coffee and heading outside to watch mountains, waterfalls, forests, and wildlife pass by.
For our family, Alaska felt more immersive than any cruise we've ever taken.
Ketchikan: The Town That Stole Our Hearts
Of all the ports we visited, Ketchikan surprised us the most.
It felt authentic, walkable, and full of character.
We loved exploring:
Creek Street
The colorful waterfront
Local shops
Historic buildings
One of the things I appreciated most was how easy it was to explore without feeling rushed.
For families traveling with children, that's a bigger benefit than people often realize.
Not every memorable day needs to be packed with excursions.
Sometimes wandering through a beautiful town together becomes the highlight.
Photo Opportunity: Creek Street photos and waterfront images.
Juneau: Alaska's Adventure Capital
Juneau felt larger and busier than Ketchikan but offered incredible scenery.
This is where Alaska's scale really started to sink in for us.
Every direction seemed to reveal another mountain, another waterfall, or another breathtaking view.
Families can easily spend an entire day here enjoying:
Whale watching
Mendenhall Glacier
Tram rides
Wildlife excursions
Even simply walking around town gave us some of our favorite photos from the trip.
Skagway: Like Stepping Into the Gold Rush
Skagway felt like stepping back in time.
The town's Gold Rush history is everywhere.
The wooden storefronts, mountain backdrop, and preserved architecture make it one of the most unique cruise ports we've ever visited.
It's easy to understand why so many Alaska cruisers list Skagway as their favorite stop.
For children, it almost feels like walking through a movie set.
Dawes Glacier Was the Moment We'll Never Forget
If there was one experience that defined our trip, it was sailing through Endicott Arm toward Dawes Glacier.
Pictures don't prepare you for it.
Videos don't prepare you for it.
The silence.
The scale.
The color of the ice.
The feeling of standing on deck surrounded by mountains and glaciers.
It's one of those rare travel moments that makes everyone stop talking and simply look.
Even AJ was completely captivated.
As parents, those shared moments are what we hope for when we travel.
What Families Should Know Before Booking Alaska
Pack More Layers Than You Think You Need
Weather changes constantly.
We used:
Jackets
Hoodies
Rain layers
Comfortable walking shoes
Often in the same day.
Don't Overbook Excursions
Some of our favorite memories came from simply exploring.
Leave room for unexpected discoveries.
Balcony Rooms Are Worth Considering
This was one destination where having easy access to scenery added tremendous value.
Wildlife, waterfalls, mountains, and glaciers appear when you least expect them.
Would We Cruise Alaska Again?
Without hesitation.
Alaska gave us something that many vacations struggle to provide:
Wonder.
It slowed us down.
It pulled us away from screens.
It gave us experiences we still talk about long after returning home.
For families considering their first Alaska cruise, it may not be the obvious choice—but it might become your favorite family vacation too.
